Types of Slip and Fall Bone Fractures

Slip and fall bone fractures, or broken bones as they are also called, are broadly described as either a simple or compound break. When describing a fracture that has no open wounds associated with the break, doctors will refer to the injury as a simple bone fracture. When describing a fracture that is associated with an open wound, doctors will refer to the injury as a compound bone fracture. A bone fracture could be a thin break in the bone (hairline fracture) or a bone that has been snapped into two or more pieces. Additional types of fractures are:

  • Compound  – fracture in which bone fragments separate completely
  • Incomplete – fracture in which bone fragments are partially joined
  • Transverse – fracture that is at a right angle to a bone’s axis
  • Linear – fracture that is parallel to the bone
  • Oblique – fracture that is diagonal to the bone’s axis
  • Spiral – fracture where at least one part of the bone has been twisted
  • Comminuted – fracture in which the bone has broken into numerous pieces
  • Compacted – fracture caused by bone fragments driving into each other.

Symptoms of a Northern California Slip and Fall Bone Fracture Injury

Many victims do not seek treatment for their bone fracture injuries soon enough. Waiting to have a bone fracture injury examined by a medical professional can result in long-term complications for a slip and fall accident patient. Once treatment is sought, doctors can properly diagnose and treat a bone fracture injury. Typically a doctor will take an X-ray to determine the location of the injury, the type of injury and what treatments the bone fracture injury will need. If the bone fracture is severe enough, surgery may be required to align and repair the bone. Doctors will frequently immobilize the bone with a cast, sling or wrap to prevent any further injury to the bone. Patients’ recovery time can vary depending on the severity of the break, the site of the break and the pre-existing health condition of the patient. For example, an individual who has osteoporosis may face a longer recuperation time than an individual who does not suffer from bone density loss. If there is any suspicion that a bone has been fractured after a slip and fall accident, see a doctor as soon as possible. Symptoms of a slip and fall bone fracture, include:

  • Intense pain
  • Swelling
  • Bruising
  • Tingling or numbness
  • Visibly out of place limb or joint
  • Bleeding, if the bone penetrated the skin
  • Inability to move a limb.
