Toning Shoe Product Liability Lawyers
Skechers Shape-ups toning shoes are marketed to have many desirable benefits, including losing weight, improving blood circulation and posture, reducing fatigue, reversing the effects of aging, and eliminating the need for a gym membership. However, toning shoes, also known as rocker bottom shoes or rounded sole shoes, alter and transform the way a person walks while wearing the shoes, forcing a walker to worker harder to maintain balance. Unfortunately, the very benefit that the shoes manufacturers claim to offer puts consumers at risk of serious injury.
In February 2011, a lawsuit was filed against Skechers by a woman who suffered stress fractures in both hips while wearing the shoes. Since then, dozens of people have reported suffering serious injuries while wearing Skechers Shape-ups and other toning shoes, including surgeries that have required hospitalization and surgery. In what was perhaps an example of art imitating life, a February 2011 episode of the hit show Grey’s Anatomy featured a woman who sustained injuries from wearing toning shoes.
Types of Toning Shoes Injuries
With a rounded sole, wearing the shoes simulates the experience of walking on soft sand. The brochure that accompanies Skechers shape-ups purports, "the core of this technology is in the dynamic rolling bottom, soft foam insert under the heel, and the dual density midsole. These three elements work together to give you the feeling of walking on soft sand-regardless of the actual surface." Toning shoes can cause numerous injuries, including stress factures from extended wear and serious injuries from falling, including:
- Trimalleolar ankle fractures
- Hip fractures
- Wrist injuries
- Head injuries
- Joint injuries
- Tendon and ligament injuries
- Spinal cord injuries
Particularly at risk are obese individuals, elderly adults, and anyone with nerve damage in their feet or other balance issues. A 2010 review in Consumer Reports compared the experience of wearing toning shoes to “walking on a flimsy suspension bridge.”
